As part of an ongoing service to protect its merchant clients from
the abuses of unauthorized and fraudulent credit card use, ImagineNation
Inc provides this IP (Internet Protocol) number lookup service for
quickly connecting to one of the Internet's IP number registries.
Each of the ImagineNation e-commerce back office utilities captures
the referring IP address of the customer and posts it to an order detail
page in compliance with the acquiring network CISP (Cardholder Information
Security Policy) mandates. Linking here from one of the order pages results
in the automatic entry of the IP number in the form fields to the left.
If you're using this utility independent of an order page, you will have to
manually enter an IP number. The fields on the left are for The Americas, Europe and parts of
Eastern Europe, and the Asia Pacific region.
IP number lookup will most often just show the network that a customer
is using. Consequently, this is not a definitive way of verifying the
location of a customer. It is however, one more item in the merchant's
arsenal of tools that can be used to detect fraud. For instance, if the
customer's shipping address is within the United States and they are ordering
from an Asian network, this is suspicious.
