  WHAT'S NEW?
On-line sales volume is the new standard by which retail merchants will measure success. This is a bold statement but, this past season Internet store sales were up by 20 to 40+% while brick and mortar store sales increased on average less than 3%.

Retail sales over the Internet are still a small percentage, about 3.2% of overall retail sales, but at growth rates like we've seen this past season, it won't take long for the internet store to become a major player on the retailing stage. In 2002 for instance, on-line sales were 2.4% of overall retail sales. It took the catalog industry 100 years to reach 3% of overall retail sales. The Internet did that in 6 years.

33% of shoppers interviewed reported that they did some of their holiday shopping on-line. This concentration was bested only by discount store shopping which was reported by 44% of the interviewed shoppers.

The above figures are courtesy of a report, conducted for Shop.org by Boston Consulting Group Inc. and Forrester Research Inc. with the use of comScore Networks Inc. data.

The first series of articles will take a look at the kinds of products that are likely to result in a successful on-line store for the small to mid-size Internet merchant.
